Moonlight Garden: A Summer Night Magic Show in My Backyard
Published: Last Updated: Estimated Reading time: 4 minsLast summer, I stumbled upon my neighbor's pool that glowed with a mysterious blue light at night, and when I got closer, I realized that it was equipped with underwater lights. This discovery led me to start a moonlight garden renovation project, and now my backyard has become a "Netflix" spot in the neighborhood! Today, I'll share my remodeling experience with you.

Three of my favorite lighting tricks
π Dancing Fountain Lights
I installed three color adjustable fountain lights in the small fountain and set them to a slow changing cool color. The kids call it the "Crystal Fountain" and now every night you can see the water dancing with a dreamy glow.
π¬ Red Carpet Staircase (Under Step Lighting Outdoor)
Recessed step lights were installed along the steps of the deck to provide just enough warm white light to illuminate your feet without being blinding. Best of all, the steps look like they're floating in the air when viewed from inside the house at night!
π Glowing Pool (Pool Light Strip + Underwater LED Strips)
I surrounded the pool with waterproof light strips, and installed two color-changing underwater LED strips on the bottom. Once set to mimic the effect of moonlight, the entire pool looked like it was fitted with a starry sky.
These plants are my secret weapon
π Moonlight Three Sisters Set
1. Silverleaf Chrysanthemum: leaves that look like they've been sprinkled with silver dust
2. Night Jasmine: small white flowers that bloom at night
3. Jasminum: the heart-shaped leaves are super photogenic
π Unexpected Surprise Contestant
What started out as a randomly planted white petunia is surprisingly beautiful in the light! Now it's my most recommended starter plant.
Tips for doing great things with little money
π° My money-saving trick:
1. Picked a mid-priced dimmable model for the fountain lights
2. Step lights were installed in batches, most visible first
3. Buy all the underwater strip lights at once when they go on sale.
4. Starting plants from seedlings saves money and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
π οΈ Installation Tips:
1. Fountain lights should be installed under the water flow
2. Step lights are most effective at 40cm intervals
3. Test the waterproofness before installing the underwater light strip
4. All wiring should be well protected
Unexpected harvest
Since the remodeling is completed:
- Since the remodeling was completed, my cat has been squatting by the pool every evening, waiting for the lights to turn on.
- Neighbors often pass by our yard by chance.
- Sitting in the garden on summer nights has made us more productive.
- The kids are volunteering to read in the garden at night.
You can do the same
1οΈβ£ Pick an area to focus on first (like a fountain or steps)
2οΈβ£ Match it with 2-3 white/silver plants
3οΈβ£ Test the effect at night with your cell phone flash
4οΈβ£ Slowly add in the rest of the lighting elements
Remember, creating a moonlit garden is like telling a story, it doesn't need to be finished all at once. The most important thing is to enjoy the process, watching your garden transform little by little, the sense of achievement is much better than just buying a ready-made one!
(Whisper: I feel like a wizard every night when I turn on the light~)
